The Family Friendly Dog Guide

Our late dog Alfie

In loving memory of a great, late pal : Alfie (2007-2018).

Choosing a dog can be a bewildering task these days, especially for families with young children or babies. With so many varied and rising dog breeds to choose from, and considering occasional worrying press reports regarding dog attacks, choosing a suitable family dog can turn into something of an ordeal. With this in mind, and seeing as we've been through the very same dilemma in the past, we decided to make this guide 11 years ago aimed at helping families choose the best dog possible to suit their circumstances.

What are the best family dogs?

Well this is huge question! Choosing a dog to suit both you, your family (if blessed) and your lifestyle correctly is vitally important. Will a puppy or an adult dog be better? How about a dog or a bitch? A small dog or a large one? And should it be a crossbreed or a pedigree? Is there even such a thing as a best family dog? And just which breeds make the best family dogs anyway?

Whichever you choose, a dog is for life (and not just for Christmas, as the well known phrase goes), and in all reality, a dog may well form a part of your life for well over a decade.

With this in mind, it is a good idea to do a little research before choosing a dog, whether it is for a family environment or for someone living alone. To help you, we've indexed over 210 breeds for you to browse in the Dog Breeds A-Z section. This section provides concise breed information regarding physical descriptions, temperament, history, skills, common breed ailments, shedding, grooming, exercise and suitable living environments, and comes with a rather unique navigation aid. This helpful dog breeds section will continue to grow so be sure to check back from time to time. In addition, we've also offered the results of our own search for the best dog for our family. The result of that will no doubt surprise you.

Most Searched Dog?

Our statistics show that currently the most searched dog seems to be the Victorian Bulldog, a medium to large sized dog originating from London in England, and a relatively recent breed. This is closely followed by the Patterdale Terrier, also from England too. The most searched dog group right now continues to be Small Dogs. Keep checking back because this changes all the time.
