The Hellenikos Ichnilatis is a small to medium sized athletic dog. The body is slightly longer than tall, and is deep chested with well arched loins and a long, high-set tail. The head is round with a rectangular muzzle, a black nose, high-set pendulous ears and dark eyes. The coat is short and sleek, and the colouring tends to be black and tan, occasionally with a white spot on the chest.
Temperament
Hellenikos Ichnilatises are friendly and outgoing dogs. They are also affectionate, couragous and very playful, and so make good companions and family pets. However, leaving alone for long periods of time or not exercising adequately can lead to boredom and destructive behaviour. These dogs are intelligent and generally good natured, but they can have rather strong characters, are independant and can sometimes be a little impatient and stubborn too. Owners therefore need to be dominant and consistent, and training must be positive as rough handling will not work. As a result these dogs are better suited to those with some experience of dog ownership and training. Hellenikos Ichnilatises are more suited as hunting dogs than family pets, but are suitable for older, more considerate children. They are fine around other dogs but will tend to chase other, smaller pets, and they make relatively effective watchdogs thanks to their loud barks and suspsicion of strangers.
History & Skills
Hellenikos Ichnilatises originate from Greece, and have a history stretching back thousands of years. Descending from ancient Greek scenthounds, they had little or no competition in their country for a long time due to isolation and inaccessibility, and so the breed remained relatively pure and unchanged. As a result they are a very healthy breed.
Breed Specific Ailments
Hellenikos Ichnilatises tend to live between 10-12 years and are a very healthy breed. One of the health concerns with this breed is keeping the pendulous ears clean to avoid infections.
Grooming
Hellenikos Ichnilatises are medium shedders and so may not be best suited to those suffering with allergies. Their grooming requirements are reasonable, and their short coats will simply need occasional brushing and shampooing.
Exercise & Environment
Hellenikos Ichnilatises love being outsoors and are certainly not suitable for small homes such as apartments. They thrive on exercise and can be destructive if this is with held. A daily walk is a must.
