The Cirneco dell Etna (plural Cirnechi) is a small to medium sized dog resembling a small Pharaoh hound. The body is lightly built with a straight topline, straight legs and a low-set tail. The elegant head has a long pointed muzzle, high-set triangular ears and small eyes. Rather uniquely, this breed can blush when excited. The coat is very short and sleek, and the colouring tends to be tan, sometimes with white markings.
Temperament
Cirnechi dell Etna are gentle, even tempered and loving dogs. These friendly dogs bond closely with owners and so make fine companions as well as family pets, especially for the more active people out there. These are quiet dogs that are not prone to excessive barking, and they are alert, intelligent and easier to train than many other hounds. As a result they can be suited to novice and experienced dog owners alike. Cirnechi dell Etna are not aggressive and tend to get along with older, more considerate children but will not tolerate pets such as rodents or birds, as they will see them as prey. They are usually friendly around strangers and so don't make effective watchdogs.
History & Skills
Cirnechi dell Etna originate from Sicily, and are an ancient breed that appear on coins from the area from between the fifth and third centuries BC. They are commonly found in the areas surrounding Mount Etna, an active volcano, and have undergone little manipulation by mankind. These dogs are fairly rare outside the island.
Breed Specific Ailments
Cirnechi dell Etna tend to live between 12-16 years. This is a hardy breed that has had little interference from man, instead with nature itself performing the selection process for their ability to work for long hours.
Grooming
Cirnechi dell Etna are low shedders and so may be suited to those suffering with allergies. Their grooming requirements are low too and their short and sleek coats will simply need occasional brushing to remove dead hair.
Exercise & Environment
Cirnechi dell Etna tend to live indoors and can be suitable for small homes such as apartments. These are agile and very active dogs that can play all day, and they will need a long daily walk plus access to an outside area for play.
