The Victorian Bulldog is a medium to large sized dog. The heavy body is thick boned, barrel chested with straight and muscular forelegs and a short tail. The head is large with a broad muzzle, a short face, wide nostrils and rose or button ears. The coat is smooth and short, and the colouring tends to be brindle.
Temperament
Victorian Bulldogs are reliable and, despite their intimidating appearance, gentle dogs. They are also loyal, playful, affectionate and crave attention, and so make good companions and family dogs. Potential owners should be aware however that they have a tendency to snore and drool. Owners will need to be firm and consistent, and so strictly speaking these dogs are best suited to those with some exprience of dog ownership and training. Victorian Bulldogs are good with older, more considerate children and other family pets, but can be aggressive with unfamiliar dogs. And despite being friendly, they make effective watchdogs and guardogs and will see off any intruders.
History & Skills
Victorian Bulldogs originate from London in England, and are a very recent breed. Concern over the unhealthy nature of modern bulldogs led to a desire to see the return of the original, taller and healthier Bulldog of the 1800s. A breeding program began in the mid-eighties, using only bull-breeds registered with the Kennel Club of Great Britain. By crossing Staffords, Bullmastiffs, Dogue de Bordeaux and the healthiest Bulldogs available, and working from old photographs and engravings, these formed the foundation of the Victorian Bulldog.
Breed Specific Ailments
Victorian Bulldogs tend to live between 12-15 years, and are a very healthy breed. This is because they are a relatively new breed that was brought about in response to the general poor health of Bulldogs.
Grooming
Victorian Bulldogs are medium shedders, and so may not be suited to those suffering with allergies. Their grooming requirements are low, and their short coats will only require occasional brushing, plus a wipe down with a damp cloth. The face will need a wipe down on a daily basis to clean inside the wrinkles.
Exercise & Environment
Victorian Bulldogs tend to live indoors and can be suitable for small homes such as apartments. Although inactive indoors, they will need access to an outside area plus a daily walk. They are best suited to temperate climates, as they and can overheat in hot weather and chill easily in cold weather. They like a long walk and the chance to run too.
