The Sloughi is a medium-sized compact and strong dog. The body is with a level topline, a tucked up underline, well muscled legs and a long, thin tail. The head is broad with a wedge shaped muzzle, slightly slanted and large dark eyes, triangular-shaped ears that lay close to the head and a dark nose. The coat is short and the colouring varies but includes shades of pale sand to red sometimes with black markings.
Temperament
Sloughis are alert and noble dogs with sweet natures. They are affectionate and make very loyal companions and devoted family pets, so much so it is not easy for them to ever change owners. It is often said that once you own one, they are yours for life. These quiet dogs are independant but also need to be around their owners and love to play, and are not suited to those with little time to dedicate to a pet. They are intelligent and sensitive, and with positive methods are fairly straightforward to train and so can be suited to novice and experienced dog owners alike. Sloughis get along well with older, more considerate children, but early socialisationa and care is needed around other animals and pets. They tend to be reserved around strangers and make excellent watch dogs.
History & Skills
Sloughis are thought to originate either from the Orient or North Africa, and have a history stretching backs thousands of years. Originally bred as sight and scent hound, they are highly revered by the Bedouin tribe, and valued as much as an Arabian horse. These days they are still used for hunting and as companion dogs.
Breed Specific Ailments
Sloughis tend to live between 11-14 years and are a very healthy breed of dog. Some of the health problems noted in this breed includes Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and sensitivity to anesthesia and medications.
Grooming
Sloughis are low shedders and so are suitable for those suffering with allergies. Their grooming requirements are low too, and their short coats will simply need brushing around once a week or so. These are clean dogs that will often clean themselves much in the same way that a cat does.
Exercise & Environment
Sloughis tend to live indoors but are not suitable for small homes such as apartments. These high-energy dogs will need a daily walk and preferably a couple of hours in a secure outside area in which to play.
