The Plott is a hardy and sturdy hound dog. The body is well-muscled with a deep chest, straight muscular legs, webbed feet and a long high-set tail. The head has a long muzzle, large eyes and large drooping ears. The water-resistant coat is short and close, and the colouring tends to include blue or brindle, often with black markings.
Temperament
Plotts are sociable and cheerful dogs with sweet natures. Loving and loyal, they thrive on affection and companionship and make fine companions and family pets, espeically for active owners, but are not well suited to those with little time to dedicate to their pets. They require early socialisation and although intelligent and quick to learn, they can be difficult to train and so are more suited to experienced dog owners. Plotts get along well with older, more considerate children, and also with other pets. However, they are very brave and will not think twice about standing up to much larger animals. They will generally get along well with strangers too, but still make effective watch dogs as they will to bark to raise the alarm if something seems amiss.
History & Skills
Plotts originate from America, where they were developed by the Plott family over two centuries, who were German immigrants and from whom they take their name. They were initially bred to hunt big game in packs, and these days they also make fine companions and family pets.
Breed Specific Ailments
Plotts tend to live between 10-14 years, and are a very healthy breed generally. Some of the health problems that have been noted include bloat and gastric torsion. They should be discouraged from eating their food too quickly.
Grooming
Plotts are low shedders and so are suitable for those with allergies. Their grooming requirements are low too, and their coat will simply need an occasioanal brushing to keep it in good condition. Their ears should be kept clean and dry to reduce the chances of infection.
Exercise & Environment
Plotts tend to live indoors but are not suitable for small homes such as apartments. They need plenty of play and exercise in order to burn off their energy, and are suited to active people. They will need a daily walk on the leash and access to an outside area for play. This must be secure because these dogs were bred to hunt, and if they catch a scent they will want to follow it right away.
