The Manchester Terrier is a compact and sturdy dog that comes in two varieties: Toy and Standard. The toy variety, also known as the English Toy terrier, is small in size at 10-12in (25-31cm) in height and 6-8lbs (3-4kg) in weight, while the standard variety, also known as the Black and Tan Terrier, is also small in size at 15-16in (38-41cm) in height and 17-20lbs (8-9kg) in weight. The body is short with well sprung ribs, slightly arched over the loin with a curved back and a tail that narrows toward the tip. The head is long and narrow with small dark eyes and a black nose. The ears fold forward and are cropped in the standard variety. The coat is short and sleek, and the colouring tends to be black and tan.

Temperament

Manchester Terriers are alert and enthusiastic dogs with inquisitive natures. They make attentive and devoted dogs and are great companions and family pets, especially for active people as they have plenty of energy. Early socialization is important with these dogs to ensure they develop stable temperaments, and while they will become close to their families, they will tend to be closer to one particular person. These are intelligent and eager dogs that are quick to learn and very obedient, and combined with their stamina and agility, this makes them highly trainable. However, they do have sensitive and independent streaks, and can be quite determined too, and so they are best suited to owners that have some experience of dog ownership rather than novices. Manchester Terriers tend to get along well with older, more considerate children that they have been raised with. They can also get along with other dogs but will tend to be aggressive with dogs of the same sex, and they will chase smaller animals such as rodents. Some can also be very possessive of their food and belongings. Around strangers they are normally wary and aloof, and their protective streaks and tendency to bark makes them good watchdogs.

Manchester Terriers originate from England, and specifically Manchester, from where they derive their name. Developed as a rat catcher and vermin hunter in the 1800s, the toy variety became popular with the Victorians. These days the standard variety retains its hunting skills but is more popular as a companion dog and family pet, and also competes in earth dog trials.

Breed Specific Ailments

Manchester Terriers tend to live between 15-18 years, and although a fairly healthy and hardy breed, some of the health problems relating to this breed include thyroid problems, glaucoma, Von Willebrand's disease, sensitive skin, lens luxation, seizures, Legg Perthes, and PRA. These dogs can be sensitive to temperature extremes and are prone to gain weight easily.

Grooming

Manchester Terriers are low shedders on a seasonal basis and are suitable for those suffering from allergies. Their grooming requirements are low too, and all they need is an occasional brushing and wipe down with a damp cloth to keep the coat shiny and in good condition. The ears should be kept clean and dry and the nails will need trimming occasionally.

Exercise & Environment

Manchester Terriers tend to live indoors, especially in cool climates, and love being outdoors in warm weather. These dogs are extremely energetic and require daily walks and the chance to play in an outside area. As they have inquisitive natures, they tend to chase things and so any walks must be carried out on a leash and yards or garden areas must be secure.
