The Black and Tan Coonhound is an active and powerful looking dog. The body is muscular with well-sprung ribs, a level topline, strong straight legs and a long tail. The head is well-shaped with a broad black nose, low-set ears and brown eyes. The coat is short and dense, and the colouring tends to be black and tan as their name suggests.
Temperament
Black and Tan Coonhounds are pleasant natured and lively yet laid back dogs. Best suited to active families due to their high energy levels, they are affectionate without being too clingy and make fine companions and dependable family dogs. Barking and drooling can be problematic, and if not kept exercised and engaged thy can become bored and destructive. These are intelligent animals and are straightforward enough to train, but they can be determined and stubborn and so are best suited to those with some experience of dog ownership and training, as assertiveness will be required. Black and Tan Coonhounds are playful and are good with older and more considerate children, as well as with other househod pets, although they can be dominant towards other dogs. Alert and non-aggressive by nature, they are generally reserved but polite around strangers and make exellent watchdogs.
History & Skills
Black and Tan Coonhounds originate from Southern USA, and descend originally from Bloodhounds and Talbot hounds, and later from Black and Tan Virginia Foxhounds too. Bred initially for its colour and great sense of smell to help it hunt and tree raccoons, these were the first Coonhounds to be considered a separate breed from American Foxhounds.
Breed Specific Ailments
Black and Tan Coonhounds tend to live between 9 to 13 years. Some of the health problems noted in this breed includes hip dysplasia, PRA, ectropion and cataracts. These dogs should not be overfed.
Grooming
Black and Tan Coonhounds are medium shedders and so may not be suited to those with allergies. Their grooming requirements however are low, and their coats will only need brushing a couple of times each week to remove dead hair. The ears should be checked regularly and kept clean to reduce the chance of infections.
Exercise & Environment
Black and Tan Coonhounds tend to live indoors but are not suitable for small homes. These are dogs with high energy and need a lot of exercise. A daily walk or run and an outside area in which to play are recommended. This must be secure as these are curious dogs prone to wandering off on a scent.
