Aristopet Tear Stain Remover

Tear Staining

Tear staining can be a problem in some dog breeds, especially those with white or light coloured coats like the Bichon Frise for example. The typical syptoms of tear staining are reddish-brown stains beneath the eyes that, while not necessarily harmful, can look very unsightly, especially in dogs used for shows. Dogs that produce excessive tears, such as breeds with bulging eyes, can also suffer from a bacterial growth on the tearing. Using a diet low in strong or artififical colouring can help alleviate staining to a degree, but thankfully there are several products available on the market that can help resolve this condition far more effectively. However, before rushing in and buying one, there are some points to consider first.

Points to Consider when choosing a Tear stain Remover

Before buying or using any tear stain remover on your dog, be sure to check that there are not other underlying health problems causing the excessive tearing and staining. Eye and ear infections, changes in diet and even yeast infections can cause tear staining in some dogs. If the staining is excessive or chronic or you notice discharge other than clear then it is wise to have this checked by a vet, especially if a foul odour is present or the dog is continuously rubbing its eyes or squinting. If the staining looks pretty normal, then a tear stain remover can be used.

Desirable Features of a Tear Stain Remover

Ultimately you will need a tear stain remover that is easy to use, that is quick and effective at removing stains and that doesn't seem to bother your dog too much. The ingredients should be clearly marked on the labelling. As a bonus, go for one that conditions as well as removes stains, as those without conditioner can leave fur looking a little dry and dull.

Instructions for using Tear Stain Remover

  1. Shake well before use;
  2. Before applying, you may choose to use a protective ophthalmic ointment for the eye. This provides a filmy barrier that prevents irritation;
  3. Moisten some cotton wool with the tear stain remover and gently wipe over the stained areas below the eyes. Take care not to get it in your dog's eyes. Remove any residue with some more clean and dry cotton wool. Heavily stained areas may require daily treatment until the stains are completely removed, and regular application will prevent recurrence;
  4. Always store your dog tear stain remover out of the reach of pets and children to avoid accidental ingestion.
