The American Staffordshire Terrier has a compact athletic and muscular build. It with a tough head, sturdy jaws, dark, round eyes, an alert expression and the ears can be either cropped or left uncropped, which tend to fold naturally over the head. The close coat is short and smooth, and the colouring of these dogs varies and includes blue, fawn, brindle, red, and white with patches of colour.

Temperament

American Staffordshire Terriers tend to be confident, laidback and cheerful dogs. Natural extroverts, they can be obedient and affectionate and have a high pain threshold due to their fighting history. They are protective and trustworthy where their owners and belongings are concerned, and are known to fight when provoked or when the aforementioned are threatened. They can be aggressive towards other dogs and so proper socialization at an early age is essential. Staffies make loyal and devoted companions but unfortunately the breed has a reputation for destruction and aggression, although much of this can be attributed to poor breeding and training as they are usually pretty easy going and good natured. Amstaffs are usually trusting, intelligent and amiable, but they can also be stubborn and over confident and so are suited to experienced dog owners. In addition, they are suitable only for older and more considerate children. As they were were bred to be aggressive towards other dogs, they should always be supervised around dogs and pets. Their reaction to strangers can vary: some can be friendly and others may be reserved and protective.

History & Skills

American Staffordshire Terriers originate from the USA, although development of these fighter dogs actually began in England, where they were known as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. And as that name suggests, they were developed by breeding bulldogs with terriers. When they were brought to the USA they were enhanced to give them a sturdier build and a stronger head, and became well-known fighting dogs in the 1800s. After dog fighting was outlawed in America in 1900, Amstaffs became popular as show dogs (although a strain with the same fighting ability remained, later recognized as a different breed called American Pit Bull Terriers). These days American Staffordshire Terriers have gentler temperaments and make quite manageable pets. They also make good watchdogs and do well assisting with police work, and show their talents in agility, guarding, and weight pulling.

Breed Specific Ailments

American Staffordshire Terriers tend to live between 11-14 years. Although this is quite a healthy breed, some of the health problems associated with the breed include eye problems, ligament problems, hip dysplasia, thyroid disorders, cancer, congenital heart disease, temperament problems, temperament problems and inherited cataracts.

Grooming

All dogs shed but American Staffordshire Terriers are not very heavy shedders. The short coat is easy to maintain and only needs occasional brushing. Bathing should be used only when necessary but rubbing down with a damp cloth will keep the coat looking clean and glossy.

Exercise & Environment

American Staffordshire Terriers are an active breed, and these dogs require daily walks on a leash and a secure outside area for vigorous play. They should be kept separated from other dogs to avoid fights. The breed thrives in warmer climates and will live indoors quite happily so long as they are given adequate exercise. Although they are sensitive to cold they can live outdoors but will be happier sharing space with the family indoors.
